Apple has released iPadOS 26.1, its latest notable software update for the iPad. This new version brings back a key multitasking feature that was removed with iPadOS 26.0. Here are all the new highlights of iPadOS 26.1.
Key iPadOS 26.1 Features: Slide Over Returns
iPadOS 26.1 heralds the return of a key multitasking feature that was removed with iPadOS 26.0. Slide Over is now available alongside the existing window system. Users can designate an app’s window as a Slide Over window with the “Enter Slide Over” option, hidden behind the green traffic light window control.
You can easily hide your Slide Over window from view and bring it back when needed. Pressing the “Globe key + \” shortcut on the hardware keyboard quickly shows or hides the window. The biggest advantage of this feature is that it floats over all other windows, allowing you to keep Slide Over on the screen even while working in another app.
In iPadOS 18, Slide Over allowed you to add multiple apps to a single stack for easy switching. This feature is no longer available, as the new version limits users to only one app at a time. However, as a positive development, the Slide Over window can now be resized precisely to your preferences, something that wasn’t possible before.
Beyond the return of Slide Over, iPadOS 26.1 also includes the following new features:
- Liquid Glass: Adds a new optional ‘Color’ setting to increase opacity.
- Music: Allows you to swipe on the MiniPlayer to change tracks.
- Apple Intelligence: Expands to eight new languages.
- Local Capture: Adds several new settings for audio/video recordings.
- Photos: Adds an updated playback slider for videos and some minor interface changes.
Also, based on beta experience, iPadOS 26.1 runs smoother than 26.0 thanks to various bug fixes and performance improvements. You can download and install iPadOS 26.1 on any iPad that supports iPadOS 26 from Settings ⇾ General ⇾ Software Update.
